A field guide to the Silurian Echinodermata of the British Isles: Part 1 - Eleutherozoa and Rhombifera Naturalis
Lewis, D.N.; Donovan, S.K.; Crabb, P.; Gladwell, D.J..
The Palaeozoic echinoderms of the British Isles are most diverse in the Silurian and Lower Carboniferous. This guide discusses and illustrates members of all major groups of echinoderms, apart from the crinoids, from the Silurian of these islands. Groups considered include the echinoids (five taxa), ophiuroids (ten taxa) and asteroids (thirteen taxa), and the extinct ophiocistioids (three species) and rhombiferan cystoids (nine species).

A study on the Gut contents of six Leathery Turtles Dermochelys Coriacea (Linnaeus) (Reptilia: Testudines: Dermochelyidae) from British waters and from the Netherlands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Nierop, M.M. van.
Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have...

Classification and monitoring of shellfish harvesting areas in England and Wales ArchiMer
Rodgers, C; Lees, D; Hudson, S.
The EC Directive (91/492/EEC) on Shellfish Hygiene requires all Member States to classify their shellfish harvesting areas into one of three categories according to the degree of faecal indicator bacteria present in samples of shellfish flesh. Historically, a limited amount of bacteriological data for England and Wales has been collected by Local and Port Health Authorities, the National Rivers Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food and other smaller organisations involves in survey work. However, in order to provide definitive classifications before 1 January 1993, it is necessary to implement on-going monthly sampling programmes at fixed points within each shellfishery. Consequently standardised sample collection protocols and...

Données sur l'écologie de l'estuaire du Tamar (Plymouth) OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The estuary of the Tamar has been surveyed from March to September 1968. The distribution and the variation of temperature, salinity and major nutrients (phosphate, nitrate and silicate) has been studied and the connection with some water circulation features discussed. The distribution of the various groups of phytoplankton in the estuary has been investigated and a comparison with open sea data carried out.

Fish assemblages of European tidal marshes: a comparison based on species, families and functional guilds OMA
Mathieson, S.; Cattrijsse, A.; Costa, M.J.; Drake, P.; Elliot, M.; Gardner, J.; Marchand, J..
In considering the use of estuarine habitats by fish assemblages, alternative views of the assemblage are increasingly being explored, based on functional rather than taxonomic aspects. The allocation of all taxa to a number of functional guilds allows a description of fish assemblages in terms of vertical zonation, habitat preferences, including the substratum preference of benthic/demersal species, and dietary preferences. This paper presents the first comparison of the structure of the fish assemblages in the tidal marshes of 6 European estuaries (Bay of Cadiz, Spain; Mira, Portugal; Loire, France; Westerschelde, The Netherlands; Humber, UK; Forth, UK). Cluster analysis was used to compare the assemblages recorded in 29 tidal marsh and associated...

Invasion genetics of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in the British Isles following its introduction for aquaculture production ArchiMer
Lallias, Delphine; Boudry, Pierre; Batista, Frederico; Beaumont, Andrew; King, J. W.; Turner, J. R.; Lapegue, Sylvie.
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, native to northeast Asia, has been translocated widely for the purpose of aquaculture and is among the most important cultured shellfish. C. gigas has a complex history of introductions in Europe. In France, massive introduction was performed in the early 1970’s, allowing massive spatfall in favourable areas to become the basis of the local oyster industry. In the U.K, hatchery propagation was used to supply local production. Some seed was also exported to Northern Europe were demographically independent populations have been reported in the last decades. In the present study 22 sites were sampled in the British Isles, Denmark, France and Spain in order to assess the genetic diversity and population differentiation...

North Sea spawning grounds of the sole (<i>Solea solea</i>) located from the 1984 Belgian plankton survey OMA
Borremans, C..
During spring 1984 large ichthyoplankton surveys were performed to determine the spawning period and the spawning places of the sole in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. In March and April most eggs were found close to the Belgian coast and the coast of Brittany, which agrees with results of previous plankton surveys. In the second of the surveys, however, high densities were also found at stations about 50 km from the coast -in the open sea. An attempt is made to explain whether these early eggs were laid in the locality, contrary to what is normally accepted, or drifted there from the Belgian or the English coast.

On the unusual patterns of phosphate vertical distribution in the Tamar estuary OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
Chemical investigations in the Tamar estuary (Plymouth, Great Britain) have revealed marked variations of phosphate content in the water column. This pattern was usually not matched by that of salinity. The origin of the phenomenon and its possible use for the computation of the flushing time of the estuary are discussed.

The development of a series of three purification tanks of standard design and their use with artificial seawater ArchiMer
Wilson, P.
In England and Wales purification tanks are built to comply with broad operating criteria specified by the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food. These have been developed over many years with limited availability of data and has resulted in design restrictions which have limited the economic viability and effectiveness of the tanks. The approved method for the large scale purification of mussels has been to spread them in a single shallow layer in large outdoor tanks with access to a supply of clean sea water. This results in a purification plant that requires a lot of land, is labour intensive and generally remote from the harvesting area. In addition such tanks are exposed to ambient conditions and can result in filtration activity, upon which...
